I Fly

I don't remember the exact moment

that I knew I had to be yours.

Walking toward you

on that spring-summer day

     (leaves and life

      all around us)

I was overwhelmed by a realization

that loving you

was never a choice.

And even if it had been,

how could I ever choose

not to?

How could I choose to give away

the wholeness

the warmth

the serenity

that loving you gives me.

Never knowing the pleasure

of seeing your body that morning

silhouetted in the sunlight

sneaking through the curtains

would've made my life emptier.

The laughter of a thousand conversations

has rekindled a blazing love of life

that I thought had been extinguished.

In those moments,

two hearts became one--

and the part of you

that you had given me

all those years ago

was returned again

to its source.
