I thought Kurt Loder was just the old guy who did MTV News. It turns out, he was also a very successful editor of Rolling Stone and had strong music industry bona fides. I got a lot of my pop culture news from Mr. Loder, including the news of Kurt Cobain’s death, perhaps the most pivotal moment of the Late Gen X/Early Millennial zeitgeist. If John Norris or Tabitha Soren did MTV News, it was usually airy and almost upbeat. Not with Kurt Loder. With Kurt Loder you got news, not entertainment. But you knew you were getting solid information from a reliable source. With that said, I offer a big thank you to the Walter Kronkite of the MTV Generation for showing us the value of reliable information, even if it was about Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC burning down Andre Rison’s house.
